Greetings,
As part of the SNU 10-10 Project hosted by the College of Fine Arts, we are pleased to invite designer Dongho So, head of Sanlimjoheong(산림조형), for a special lecture titled "All Chairs Are Equal."
This lecture explores the path forward for industrial designers in the age of artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on the integration and collaboration between industrial design and other disciplines. It aims to uncover essential basic engineering elements that designers must understand and apply to enhance their expertise.
Lecture Overview:
Dongho So has spent over a decade exploring how objects generate new meanings within regional and cultural contexts. He expands the boundaries of design by fusing tradition and modernity, as well as craft and industry, and demonstrates how design thinking can go beyond aesthetics to create practical value and meaning within urban and social networks.
Through an experimental approach that merges industrial materials like brass, iron, and plastic with traditional materials such as hanji (Korean traditional paper) and lacquer, So has developed creative objects that challenge conventional forms. His works, such as hanji stools and lamps made from assembled rice and soup bowls, reflect his exploration of new sculptural possibilities in everyday materials.
Projects like “Street Chairs of Seoul,” rooted in the context of Euljiro, exemplify his regionally grounded design practice. These projects rediscover the cultural and social meanings embedded in the everyday objects of the city and explore how design can interact with urban spaces.
We look forward to your interest and participation in this meaningful event.
