The 13th Open Human Rights Lecture: 'Democracy and Human Rights' (Application Deadline: April 27)

Apr 21, 2025 - Apr 27, 2025

Hello,

The Human Rights Center will be hosting an online lecture series titled "Democracy and Human Rights" from May 1 to June 5, every Thursday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

As extremism, populism, and political polarization spread globally, we are witnessing phenomena where democracy and human rights are under threat or in retreat. The international order, which should collaboratively pursue peace and prosperity based on universal human rights, is also facing a critical crisis. A comprehensive review and discussion are needed on the characteristics and causes of modern authoritarianism, the political mechanisms of hostility and hatred toward others, and their effects. The values of constitutional democracy, the rights and responsibilities of citizens as members of a political community, as well as issues of human rights protection and distributive justice, call for deeper reflection and discussion at this time. This lecture series aims to provide a multifaceted perspective on various issues surrounding democracy and human rights, and to explore future challenges together through questions and discussions. We look forward to the participation of those interested in this topic.

*Lecturer: Dr. Juyoung Lee (Research Professor, Human Rights Center, Seoul National University)
